Data Definitions

Legally Authorized Capacity: Refers to slots in licensed child care centers and family child care homes and license-exempt center-based programs. (largely in public school and municipal settings).

Actual Capacity: The sum of Reported Openings and Reported Enrollment

% Legally Authorized Capacity: Actual Capacity divided by Legally Authorized Capacity

Enrollment: A space currently utilized with a child enrolled.

Infant Toddler: Full time enrollment as reported by the program.
Preschool: Full time enrollment as reported by the program.
Nursery School: Number of partial day enrollments spanning multiple sessions.
School Age: Number of partial day enrollments spanning multiple sessions.

Openings: Child care slot(s) available for enrollment for a child/ren of the corresponding age(s). Openings are self-reported by program either by age group or at the facility level, if by facility level, openings are divided by all ages served

Openings %: Reported Openings divided by the Actual Capacity for that age group.

Infant/Toddler: 0 to 35 Months in Center Based Programs, Infant = 0-17 Months in Family Child Care Programs
Preschool: 3 Yrs to 5 Yrs in Center Based Programs, 18 Months to 5 yrs in Family Child Care Programs
School Age: 5 Yrs to 12 Yrs in Center Based Programs and in Family Child Care Programs
Nursery School: Part Day Enrichment Program for 3 Yrs to 5 Yrs


Data Collection

Enrollment and Openings were collected September 1, 2023 – January 2024
Data includes actual reported enrollment and openings and projected enrollment and openings for programs that did not respond to the survey.
